We will be joining "Save Our Beach" on this day to help clean up
the beach and waterways in the Seal Beach/Long Beach area.
The San Gabriel River empties out into the Pacific Ocean here at
River's End. 53 cities drain into the river and all their unwanted
& unrestricted trash washes down storm drains right into the
San Gabriel River.
And yes, you guessed it, right into the
Pacific Ocean.
On this day we will all be meeting at the listed coordinates by
10:00am. If everyone joining can be there about 10 minutes early,
it will help with all the paper work so we can head out no later
than 10:10am.
When you arrive, look for the Easy Up
with Save Our Beach on it. There everyone needs to sign in.
You will be signing two papers. (1) for Save Our Beach so they get
a record of everyone who is working and (2) for geo-caching. Use
your caching name here so we can keep a record of those of you who
show up. Anyone not signed in will NOT be credited with a find for
this event!!
Save Our Beach is a non-profit organization and depends on
volunteers to help keep our beaches clean for folks like you to
enjoy.
Once everyone is there, we will carpool up to the work location
along the San Gabriel River. Our objective is to clean up a 1/4
mile stretch on one side of the river ONLY. We will not have to
worry about bicycles or pedestrians since the bike path is on the
other side of the river.
Children are welcomed but they must
be watched because the work location is very rocky and very close
to the river. We will work until 1:00pm. Anyone who wishes to
work longer may do so. If you find this very rewarding and self
gratifying, please talk to Kim with Save Our Beach and get
more information about future clean up dates.
Everyone in attendance should bring gloves, preferably
disposable ones. I will have a box for those who do not have them.
We would also like everyone to bring at least (2) 30 gallon trash
bags.
If any of you joining has a truck, it
will be very appreciated if you can bring it so we can haul all the
trash we gather back to the dumpsters at River's End.
Everyone should bring something to snack on, water, a hat and
sunscreen if its a warm sunny day. There are restrooms at River's
End but NOT where we will be working.
There are no caches where we will be, but afterwards I'm sure
you can find plenty in the surrounding towns to keep you busy for a
few hours if need be. I will be placing a puzzle cache near River's
End for those who want to try their luck.
We are here today to make a difference even though the future
may see more trash and debris flowing still towards the ocean. If
we do our part, hopefully, in the days to come others will come
back on their own or with Save Our Beach to continue this nobel
cause. But most of all, we must hope others STOP the practice of
allowing waste to just flow into storm drains, into our waterways
and into our beautiful Pacific Ocean.
