Geocache Description:

Federal building vanishes!

Warning - bee hives in area.

I placed this cache at this location, hoping that someone can help figure out what building used to be here and what it's purpose was before it was demolished in 2008.

***update*** Turns out this used to be the Corkstown Geodetic Observatory. More info can be found here: (visit link)

I've been meaning to check out the building for a number of years, as it is only visible from March Road during the winter when all the leaves are gone. Things got busy, and the next thing I knew, the building was gone. Here's what I've been able to figure out:

The property actually has an address - 901 Corkstown Road (used eMap from the Ottawa.ca website)
The property is/was owned by Public Works Canada (found an old PWC sign on site)

All that's left on-site are a few concrete pillars (3 of which have geodetic benchmarks on the top of them) and a few other pillars with switches and holes for audio plugs (?)

As you can see from the attached air photos (again, from eMap and Bing.ca maps), there was actually a building on top of the hill - what it was used for, I do not know. Maybe it was something to do with the Difenbunker in Carp? I do remember that there used to be telecom lines that ran under what is now Beaverbrook and Kanata Lakes from downtown Ottawa to the bunker.

Was this some sort of support building for the Difenbunker?

Anyways, this cache is a small camo’d loc & loc container. Inside, you’ll find the usual cache note, a log book, and a pencil. Yes, there is a first-to-find prize, so good luck!
