Purgatory, Paradise & Hellhole Multi-Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

odlids: Well here we are again!!
GZ is in stage 2 of it's upgrade and is again (hopefully) safe behind fencing.
It should be available again mid 2024, but we will visit every 4 weeks with an update of the situation as required.
At least we will get to visit the area again and take in all it has to offer.🙂
All the best

Geocache Description:

A lovely walk where you can learn the history of sandstone quarrying in Sydney's Pyrmont region. Bring along the kids as Ground Zero features a lovely playground overlooking Sydney Harbour.

Bring a camera as well and admire the view!

"Quarrying of Pyrmont's sandstone began in 1853 when Charles Saunders leased land on the north-west side of the peninsula and began digging out what would become some of Sydney's finest sandstone. When Charles's son, Robert, took over in 1880 the quarrying was extended further with the introduction of steam drilling.

Paradise, Purgatory and Hellhole were the three main Saunders quarry sites, each of which produced stone with distinctive qualities. They were said to have been nicknamed by Scottish workmen.

Hellhole was located north-east of Wentworth Park on Wattle Street and was so-named because of its depth and the fact that it filled to the brim with every heavy downpour. Purgatory was to the north, producing a very hard stone with a grey streak which could crack. Paradise, less than a kilometre north of Hellhole, produced the best stone, yellow block."

The rating is '2' for terrain due to being a little difficult for the vertically challenged. I'm 5'8" and can easily reach the Geocache. Let me know if you think the ratings need adjusting.

Otherwise, it's a very easy walk you could even bring a stroller along to. There's about 500m between WP1 and GZ.

To find Ground Zero:

Look at the sandstone blocks. I have substituted letters below for most of the numbers on the main sandstone block containing a plaque. Use the code below to solve the location of Ground Zero.

The years the Saunders family worked the area:
ABCD to EFGH.

Yellowblock sandstone was extracted in IJKL. (Year).
Quarries in Ultimo yielded over M.N million tonnes of sandstone.

Ground Zero:
S: DG CA.FIM
E: ACH EA.6IL

Note that only the '6' above is a number. The rest are letters.

You can take this along to help you fill in the missing letters:

A: ___ B: ___ C: ___ D: ___ E: ___

F: ___ G: ___ H: ___ I: ___ J: ___

K: ___ L: ___ M: ___ N: ___

S: _____ ____._____

E: _____ ____._____
