Geocache Description:

Believe it or not for a number of years this road was part of the Pacific Highway. I think it's an interesting bit of history, as at the Buladelah end terminus you see 3 generations of the highway west to east. The past (Booral Rd), the present, and the future (currently under construction - early works completed).

Now for the history lesson:

The original alignment of the highway followed what is now known as "Bucketts Way" which starts at 12 mile creek and terminates just south of Taree at Purfleet. In 1952 the decision was made to relocate the highway along a more coastal route between 12 mile creek and Taree which would be 20km shorter and pass through easier terrain.

As a temporary measure while the roads between Karuah and Buladelah were brought up to standard and the river at Karuah was bridged, Booral road between Buladelah and Booral was reconstructed and sealed to allow highway traffic to use the new alignment as soon as possible. From 1952 until 1963 the Pacific Highway continued to use the old alignment (Bucketts Way) to Booral where traffic would turn right and continue through to Buladelah along what is now known as Booral Road.

If you feel adventurous and aren't in a rush I recommend detouring via this road on your journey north or south. It's a pretty quiet road but do be careful of other cars and even trucks and busses through the mountains, it's quite narrow and there is no shoulder. I wouldn't recommend it in bad weather or at night.

If you don't want to travel the whole road fear not, the cache is conveniently located just 3km down from the turnoff near Buladelah so won't add much time to your travels.

Cache is a 200mL sistema container, will accommodate small swaps, coins and travel bugs. Please BYO pen. It's located in what looks to be an old rest stop. Be sure to walk down and have a look at the old timber bridge you just crossed over.

Be careful retrieving the cache as the fence has some barbs on it, but is easily avoidable.

Big thanks to Ozroads (visit link) for much of the info.
