Welcome to the sugar bush!

This cache is hidden along one of the trails used to harvest our maple syrup. Starting early in the spring (Feb 26th, the weekend the cache was placed) you can watch us make this sap into tasty syrup!

Along this trail and the way to it you will see many sap collection buckets, if you are here during spring. Every day this sap is collected and brought back to the sugar shack to be boiled down into syrup. Tapping the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) trees does not harm them and the sap collection only takes a portion of their sap.

Sap to make the best syrup is the first sap of the spring. Sugar Maples store up sugar for the winter and are triggered to start moving sap and this stored sugar in spring by the warming temperatures.

The best weather for maple syrup sap is mild days, just above freezing (to get the sap flowing) then cold nights below freezing. Come by and enjoy the forest, or even help collect the sap, then warm up in the maple lodge with a plate of pancakes and syrup.

The park does tend to get very busy during the maple syrup season so stealth may be needed! Other times of the year it likely will be quiet out here and you likely will be on your own.

Park at Mountsberg Conservation Area. Conservation Area closes at dusk. Do not try to park on Milboughough Line, its no parking on this stretch and they will ticket and tow.

Regular entrance fees apply. Or save money (and get perks) by becoming a member. Automated gates now in use, schedule your visit online is best, but usually someone at the gatehouse on weekends. Outhouses available on site. Park closes at dusk.
