Geocache Description:

The Pettifar Track is part of the Totara Reserve Regional Park in the Pohangina Valley. The Park comprises one of the last and largest remnants of the original forests that covered Manawatu-Rangitikei. Kahikatea and totara dominate. These coords, S 40 07.708, E 175 51.381, are for the upper parking area on the Pohangina Valley East Rd which provides the most direct access to the cache site part of the Pettifar Track. A steep descent takes you onto a terrace edge high above the Pohangina River and you continue along the track. A seat offers a chance to rest, and enjoy the view and the birdsong. The cache is a small plastic box in a camo bag. Room for a few swaps. Note: The full Pettifar Track is a loop and can be completed in 1 1/2- 2 hours. If you wish to do this we suggest you park at the lower parking area (coords. S 40 07.981, E 175 50.945), and check out the information board on site. You can reach the cache by directly entering the forest track from there, too. Additional note, Feb 2024: you can no longer do a bigger loop incorporating the adjacent Gilchrist Track too as this has now been closed due to serious erosion, "Gilchrist Track (CLOSED PERMANENTLY) A section of this track fell into the river during the Cyclone Gabrielle flood event. This track has now been closed permanently" (info from Totora Reserve, Horizons Regional Council website).
