Geocache Description:

Broughton's Point - Accessible only while traveling West

Broughton's Point is said to mark the furthest point that William Broughton traveled up the Columbia River.

Thirteen years before Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery journeyed down the Columbia River, members of Captain George Vancouver of the Royal Navy's expedition became the first Europeans to journey up the Columbia to the area of Vancouver, Washington. In October 1792, Lieutenant William Broughton and his craft "The Chatham" made it across the reef at the mouth of the Columbia, while Captain Vancouver remained at sea on the "Discovery". Broughton journeyed as far upstream as Point Vancouver and Reed Island, before turning around.

Today, William Broughton might cry at the sight of what he sees.
Unfortunately the State of Oregon does not come to this place often enough to keep litter under control and don't provide garbage cans. The fact that this is a common stop along the long drive West to Portland, many people feel it is a place to empty their car before arriving at Grandma's house (or whever they are going. If you look to the West, you will see what I mean.

It's an excellent place to practice CITO if you are so inclined.

Luckily the cache isn't near garbage. The cache is at the east end of the viewpoint near a tree. Since the cache was placed in February I don't know of the critters and creepy crawlies that live here but I assume you will see mosquitoes, spiders and chipmonks. And sometimes if you are lucky you will see (or hear) a fish jump. It's really a beautiful scene if you don't see the garbage.

The cache is a standard type hide but please be careful. The rocks aren't always as secure as they seem. When placing the cache I stepped on a large boulder and it went right down about 5 feet. In fact, it opened up the hidey spot. I checked and the rest of the rocks seem secure but please be careful.

Please rehide the cache well.

Congratulations to CB & BB for FTF!!
