Geocache Description:

A Cache and dash....
Here is the final resting place of the favored horses of King William IV & Fred Fitzclarence.

This short little path must of been somewhere near the stables linked to the orignal Governor's house.

A Bit of history....

King William IV

Third son of George III and younger brother to George IV
King 26 June 1830 -1837 inherited the title at the age of 64

Served in the Royal Navy from the age of 13 as midshipman, arrested in Gibraltar with his ship mates in a drunken brawl, but swiftly released when they knew who he was!

William became a Lieutenant in 1785 and captain of HMS Pegasus the year after. Stationed in the West Indies under Nelson to whom he became a great friend.
Served in New York during the American war of independence – George Washington even approved a plot to kidnap him...as long as they didn't hurt him in any way.
Promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1789 and ceased active service in 1790, and managed to persuade/ bribe George III (daddy) to make him a Duke in 1789.
War with France was declared 1793 and he was anxious to get a command, but the admiralty never gave him one., possibly because he was a bit boozy.
Live “in sin” for 20 years with Irish actress Dorothea Jordan and had 10 illegitimate children with her...left her cause he more needed money. She fled creditors to France died in poverty near Paris in 1813.....another long story..
He became King in 1830
He was the only monarch to appoint a priminister contrary to the will of parliament, but during his reign great reforms were enacted by Parliament including the Factory Act, preventing child labour, the Abolition Act, emancipating slaves in the colonies (though at one time he spoke against the need for it), and the Poor Law, standardising provision for the destitute.
The Duke heavily in debt need to marry into money hence the marriage to the 25 yr old Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, this marriage lasted 20 years but there were no heirs to the throne. .... hence Victoria of Kent.

Fred Fitzclarence

Illegitimate son of William IV born 9 December 1799
Frederick FitzClarence gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 36th Herefordshire Regiment of Foot
Whilst a lieutenant in the Coldstream guards commanded a small detachment of Guards to act in support of the police with the arrest of the Cato Street conspirators, Cato street conspirators plotted to kill the Priminister and the Cabinet and set up a safety committee to oversea a radical French style revolution.
The conspirators were aggrieved by the by the Peterlee massacres and the recent six acts legislation.

During the violent arrest Fred's life was saved by James Graham “the bravest man in the British army”
