Ulley Reservoirs is situated approx 4 miles south of Rotherham in the bend of the M1. It was decided in 1863 that Rotherham needed another water supply and Ulley became the area with a estimat4ed volume of 580,000,000 litres. After a Navies strike in 1872 it was finally opened in 1874 with a prediction of meeting the needs of Rotherham for the next 20 years. In 1972, Ulley sailing club was formed and with added reservoirs in the Sheffield area now supplying Rotherham by the 1980’s it was no longer needed as a water supply but was kept on standby by Yorkshire water. In 1986, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council became the owners and the name changed to Ulley Country Park. In June 2007, the unprecedented rain and local floods threatened the embankment, as the overflows could not cope with the excess water. Pumps were laid in by the fire service and over 1000 tons of hardcore added. The Motorway was closed as the water was pumped away as there was a fear the collapse of the embankment would send a surge of water down over the M1 and the electricity sub station beyond. However, the pumping worked although local areas were flooded for longer. The reservoir is currently drained while work goes on to reinforce the embankment and other works at a cost of over £2.5 million. It is hoped it will reopen in the near future. Once it is reopened, there are quite a few walks around the reservoir and the local area.
