22nd Street Park in San Pedro, CA is finally opened. At a cost of $7 million dollars and almost two decades of community debate, followed by many delays San Pedro’s 22nd Street Park is finally opened.
The park is located on a former tank farm. Many ideas were given for what this site should be used for. Among them was a 9-hole golf course, a sports complex with playing fields, an aquarium, an international outlet mall, one or more hotels and even a fenced in dog park. The state has restrictions on port property and the public wanted something else. So January 9th, 2010 the 16 acre park opened with a 4 ½ acre open grassy sports field, bike paths, educational signs, natural plants and shade trees, decomposed granite walking path, two bocce ball courts, picnic benches, drinking fountains and of course permanent restrooms (and all this for a mere $7 million dollars).
We live directly above this project and we love the view out of our front windows of the beautiful green grass, trees and shrubs instead of the dingy dirt field it was before.
