Geocache Description:

A simple 2-stage multi cache along the Starkey Loop Trail. Assume N43 and W080 for the final stage.

Final is a 2L camo taped thermos about 25 meters off the trail.
There are a lot of very friendly chickadees along this trail, so bring some bird seed. They may even greet you at the trailhead. I had them eating out of my hand (see photo posted)

The Starkey Hill trail property is currently owned and maintained by the Grand River Conservation Authority. It was originally purchased by the Starkey family in 1849. The highest point in Puslinch township lies along the trail, and provides a great view of downtown Guelph. In 1911, the Geodetic Survey of Canada created a triangulation station at this high point. The wooden tower stood 100’ tall with a 36’ x 36’ base. There were hundreds of these towers constructed for a triangulation survey project. The information gathered formed the basis for topographic mapping used today. The tower was taken down in 1920 and used to build an implement shed on the Starkey farm, so there are no remnants to be found. The 4km loop runs through a mix of hardwood forest and pine plantation and is a very popular local hiking trail. The chickadees are very abundant and it’s a good idea to bring bird seed along with you – they’ll eat right from your hand.
