You can drive up to Mass Rock to a car parking area. You need to climb a small wall to get to the Mass Rock itself. The cache is close. You do not need to enter the Altar enclosure to find cache.
The cache is a small black tab lock box . It contains a logbook, pencil and a number of swappable items. The cache is situated at Mass Rock, Ballyholland. Ballyholland itself means Caiseal (big rock or ditch). Historically, it was common for locals to give place names in Gaelic which described the geography of the area.
A wee bit about Mass Rock itself. During the Penal Times (when Ireland was under British marshal law), it was forbidden to celebrate Mass, on pain of death. Mass Rock is in a hollow, at the top of a hill, where it is completely hidden from view. Back then, a priest would arrive on foot, and in disguise, and he would wait up there, for his flock to arrive. People would sneak up the hill through the forest, one at a time. When all expected had arrived, lookouts would be posted and Mass would be celebrated.
Mass Rock is the altar of an outdoor church, and although it has no walls or windows, it is a real, bona fide church which has stood for hundreds of years. Enjoy the views!
