After the demolition of the People's Theatre at Blaha Lujza square a proposal was made to build the new theater in the City Park, at the Felvonulási square. A tender was held in 1965, but no first prizes were given. The second prize was shared between plans of Miklós Hofer and Jan Boguslawski - Bogdan Gniewiewski. The next two decades dragged on with the planning at the Company for Public Building Planning led by Miklós Hofer. The building permit was finally given in 1985, but the construction went no further than chopping out a few trees. In 1988 a tender was held for a new location and the Engels (today Erzsébet) square was chosen.
A decade passed without any progress. In 1996 the parliament finally agreed to move on the next phase, but the project became severely entangled by political quarrels in the next few years. After tendering the plans (won by Ferenc Bán), the construction began in 1998, but the new government elected in the same year stopped the work, finding it too costly. In 1999 ministry commissioner György Schwajda entrusted Mária Siklós to make plans for a building at a new location, the bank of the Danube, but following the rage of the architect scene, a tender was held, resulting in György Vadász's victory. As he was not willing to tailor Siklós's plans any further, the construction began with her plans on September 14 2000. The new National Theatre opened on the National holiday, March 15 2002.
The building lies on the bank of the Danube, in the Ferencváros district, between the Soroksári road, the Grand Boulevard and the Lágymányosi Bridge, and is a five-minute walk from the Csepel HÉV. The area of the theatre, along with an open air stage is 20 844 square meters, and can be functionally separated into three parts. The central part is the nearly round building of the auditorium and stage, surrounded by corridors and public areas. The second is the U-shaped industrial section around the main stage. The third section is the park that surrounds the area, containing numerous memorials commemorating the Hungarian drama and film industry.

Elozmények: Miután a metró építése miatt a Blaha Lujza téri régi Nemzeti Színházat lebontották, az 1964-es pályázat a Városliget szélén, a Felvonulási téren jelölte ki az új Nemzeti helyét. Az 1965-ös építészeti pályázaton nem adtak ki elso díjat. A két megosztott második díjat Hofer Miklós, valamint Jan Boguslawski és Bogdan Gniewiewski pályázatai nyerték el. Ezt követoen Hofer Miklós vezetésével két évtizeden keresztül húzodott az épület tervezése a Középület-tervezo Vállalaton belül. Végül 1985-ben kiadták az építési engedélyt. Az építkezés azonban nem jutott messzebbre néhány fa kivágásánál. 1988-ban új helyszín-kijelölo pályázatot írtak ki, ahol az Engels (a mai Erzsébet) tér bizonyult a nyertes helyszínnek. 1997-ben Bán Ferenc nyerte meg az építészeti tervpályázatot. Az 1998-ban indult építkezést azonban az új kormány a munkagödör kiemelésének stádiumában leállította. 1999-ben Schwajda György miniszteri biztos pályáztatás nélkül Siklós Máriát bízta meg az új dunaparti helyszínen a tervezéssel. Az építésztársadalom felháborodását követoen mégis tervpályázatot írtak ki, amit Vadász György nyert meg, o azonban nem volt hajlandó Siklós Mária tervének a csinosítására. Így végül a színházat az építészno tervei alapján fejezték be. Siklós Máriát az épület tervezésért Mádl Ferenc köztársasági elnök kitüntette, a Magyar Építész Kamara etikai vétség miatt elmarasztalta. Az épület: A Nagykörút déli végétol a Lágymányosi híd felé gyalog tíz percre, vagy egy HÉV megállóra található színház építése Siklós Mária tervei alapján 2000. szeptember 14-én kezdodött és rekord ido – alig 15 hónap alatt – készült el. Az épület területe szabadtéri színpaddal együtt 20 844 négyzetméter és funkcionálisan három részre tagozódik. Az épület központi része a majdnem kör alaprajzú nézoteret és stúdiószínpadot magába foglaló épületrész, ezt veszik körbe a közönségforgalom helyiségei, valamint a nagyszínpadot „U” alakban szegélyezo üzemi szárny. A harmadik rész az egészet körülölelo és a magyar színház- illetve filmvilághoz szorosan kapcsolódó park. |
