Obelisks have been erected from early Egyptian times through to the modern times and have become associated with timelessness and memorialization.
There are a series of three Obelisks in this area. Two on the NW and SE corners of Memorial and Crowchild and the third is here. We often wondered what these one memorialized. We contacted the City Arts and Cultural department for information, they didn't know. Then we moved on to the Streets and Parks department.
It turns out that they are simply decorative features. They were constructed as part of the upgrading and widening of Crowchild Trail back in the early 80’s.There was an urban landscape Consultant who worked with Parks, Planning and Development, and the community to develop the designs and details for the small ‘Pocket parks ‘that were created as part of the community enhancement part of the road project.
