Maharajah Rajaram

Rajaram Chuttraputti, Maharajah di Kolhapur, morì improvvisamente il 30.11.1870 a venti anni quando era in visita a Firenze. Fu cremato e la famiglia, nel luogo della cerimonia, alla confluenza di due corsi d’acqua – il Mugnone e l’ Arno – dove le sue ceneri furono sparse come vuole la tradizione indiana, fece erigere un monumento, opera dello scultore Fuller, con iscrizioni in italiano, inglese, hindi e punjabi. Il luogo è al limite estremo del parco delle Cascine, ed è appunto chiamato “L’Indiano”; dal centro città può essere raggiunto solo a piedi o in bicicletta, oppure con l’autobus n.17 che ha il capolinea a metà del Parco delle Cascine, in auto si può arrivare vicino passando dal cimitero di Peretola e poi proseguire a piedi.

Rajaram Chuttraputti, Maharajah of Kolhapur, died suddenly on November 30th, 1870 when he was only 20 while was visiting Florence. He was cremated and his Family, in the place of the ceremony, at the confluence of two rivers - Mugnone and Arno - where his ashes were strewn according to the hindi tradition, made put up a monument with the bust of the young man, piece of the sculptor Fuller, with inscriptions in various languages: italian, english, hindi and punjabi. The place is at the west end of the Park of Cascine, and is for this reason named “The Indian”; from downtown you can reach the place only on foot on by bicycle, or taking the bus 17 which terminus in the middle of the Park, by car you car arrive close from west passing near the cemetery of Peretola and after going on foot.
