Geocache Description:

May 1, 2000 - an announcement was made that Selective Availability would be lifted.

May 2, 2000 - at approximately midnight, EST Selective Availability lifted and the accuracy of GPS technology was greatly improved.

May 3, 2000 - Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket at N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800, filled with videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a logbook and pencil. He called it the First GPS Stash. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav.

Within three days two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was born!


Come celebrate years of geocaching at Boyce-Mayview Park (click on "Related Web Page" above for a trail map) on Saturday, May 1st, noon - ?? . This multi-event is part of worldwide celebration of 10 years of geocaching. Come prepared to swap caching stories, eat (potluck style – please post in your log what you will bring), and cache. We'll provide the paper products and beverages. Don’t forget to mention how many folks will attend in your log. For those that need it, Wi-Fi is available at the nearby USC Recreation Center. The event schedule will be pretty loose...a group photo will be taken at 1:00 and food will be ready immediately afterwards.


A commemorative geocoin will be available at the event…customized for this specific event. The coin is trackable on GC.com with a unique icon (tracking number is engraved along the edge of the coin), and will be finished in shiny gold with translucent and hard enamels. Only a limited amount will be available. You can reserve yours in your will attend log. ALL COINS HAVE BEEN RESERVED AS OF 4/16
