Parking can be easily found on the the nearby roads, with no restrictions. There is a very short walk to the cache along a paved footpath. Suitable for buggies, bikes etc.
Be careful of muggles as there are some houses overlooking the cache site, although the area is generally very quiet most of the time.
The cache is not on the memorial.
The cache is placed near a memorial for former staff and patients of South Ockendon Psychiatric Hospital.
South Ockendon Psychiatric Hospital, known locally as The Colony, was a hospital for patients with severe learning difficulties and for patients with major and rare mental health illnesses. The hospital opened in 1932 and was built in several small, ground level clinics, which covered a quarter mile site.
The hospital was closed in late 1994 and was left to become derelict for years. Finally in 1998 it was demolished and made way for new houses. There is still one surviving building, which is the Function Hall complex which is home to Brandon Groves Community Club and nearby to the cache.
The grounds are well maintained by the local council and are a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle of the main road. The area on sunny spring day when the trees are in blossom is a delight.
If you follow the footpath past the the cache and further into the grounds you can get a great view of the Mardyke Valley area.
