Geocache Description:

On the side of State Highway 6 (Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway) near McDowell Drive and Threepwood Estate.

The cache is a 500ml screw top container. When placed it contained the usual log book and trading items. It is located at the Robert Lee Memorial. There is an AA sign at the junction of the State Highway and McDowell Drive indicating parking for those wishing to access the memorial.

Robert Lee was a farmer and mining entrepreneur who brought the Threepwood Farm in 1910. The development of Wakapitu's first irrigation scheme was typical of his innovative style. This engineering feat carried water from a creek on the Remarkables to Threepwood using pipes suspended by wire ropes to cross the Kawarau River.

Robert Lee agreed to supply roadside water from the scheme to horse teams using the Queenstown to Arrowtown route. Design features included an angle that allowed horses to drink without being unhitched. The lower trough supplied water to sheep and dogs!
