This is the first event held in Ermelo and hopefully not the last one. It is an informal social get-together. Ermelo is more or less accessible for some cachers in KZN, MP, GP, FS and LP. Team Bakgat is sponsoring the location and the event will be held at his kingdom. Please note that this venue is subject to change and it all depends on the number of cachers. We are not expecting many cachers but we are also preparing for the unexpected such as 100 teams arriving in Ermelo. (Lol)
It is not well known but we have 5 cacher teams in Ermelo namely LeoDes, Babbelenbekkie, Thequeenofhearts, gerhardoosMPsa and BAKGAT. Our objective is to build camaraderie among our tiny geocaching community and to have the chance to meet with the face behind the log or cache hide. If you are a newbie and you have no idea what to do but you have the urge to find a cache before the event please feel free to contact gerhardoosMPsa or Bakgat via e-mail and they will assist you. We will publish details of new caches in due time. If you want them as FTF’s please remember that there is a cacher with the name Wazat who moves around anytime and anywhere and who has a passion for finding FTF’s. If you see him jumping out of a tree, running past you, sitting on a hill in the moonlight, peeping around a rock or driving pass with a 4x4 Corsa/Toyota do not be surprised.
• At about 12h00 we will get together at the published waypoint (S26 32.761 E29 59.478) and we are going to chat a lot. At about 18h00 we will call it quits – yes the same day and not the next day. Barbeque fires will be provided, please bring your own food, cutlery, refreshments and deckchairs. If you are in a hurry to find caches in this area or you wish not to have a barbeque please feel free to drop by to say Hi and Bye. There is no obligation to stay.
• Some paperless caching will be shown – by using a cell phone, pc/laptop and GSAK. Feel free to show us your techniques and please feel free to share your expertise and experiences. Please note that this will be informal and will be shown on request only. Feel free to ask gerhardoosMPsa for any assistance.
• We will explain earth caches and the different grading cachers can achieve to those that wants to know more.
• Technical terms and other requirements such as how to log will be dealt with. Some handouts will be given to assist newbies. We will also explain how to stash a cache and we will discuss what is good and what is not so good.
• We will share some stories and we will show some photos of the different locations.
• We will also show the program called GSAK and the abilities of this program for those interested to learn more.
• We will explain the differences between the different types of subscribers to geocaching.com.
• We will try to answer any other questions and if we do get stuck we will get the correct answer and we will publish this on the listing.
Cachers have a passion to sign logbooks therefore a logbook will be available at the event and we would like everybody to sign this logbook. However, it is not a prerequisite to log this event.
Please feel free to join us and we hope you will learn something new and we hope you enjoy the company. Yes, if your name is the first one in this logbook you can log it as a FTF. If you plan to visit us please give us an indication of the number of adults and the number of children that will attend.
19 March 2010: Just an update. A very kind person donated a 30 day free trial full membership to geocaching.com on behalf of Groundspeak. The only restrictions are that it must go to someone who has never previously been a premium member and/or not already received a 30 day free trial. So you if you are an ordinary member and you want to test the benefit of premium membership then you could stand a chance to get this for free. The activation code will be given to you via the donator. If there is more than one caching group that is eligible then we will throw a dice and the one that match the number will receive it.
