Le origini della Facoltà di Agraria e Scienze Forestali di Firenze risalgono alla creazione dell’Istituto Forestale di Vallombrosa e dell’Istituto agrario di Firenze negli anni ‘60 del XIX secolo e nascono dal fecondo connubio tra cultura scientifica ed esercizio pratico delle tecniche agronomiche e forestali.
Nel 1861, con l’unificazione del territorio italiano, ci si pose il problema delle sorti dei boschi degli ex stati e degli strumenti per arrestarne il degrado e migliorarli. Divenne dunque evidente la necessità di creare in Italia, come avevano fatto già da tempo la Germania, l’Austria e la Francia con le loro prestigiose scuole, un corso di studi forestali in grado di dar vita a tecniche conformi alla nostra economia e alle caratteristiche del nostro territorio.

The origins of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences in Florence dating back to the creation of the Forest of Vallombrosa and the Agricultural Institute of Florence in the 60s of the nineteenth century and born of fertile union between scientific knowledge and practical exercises, agricultural and forestry techniques.
In 1861, with the unification of the Italian territory, it was faced the problem of the forests and the means to arrest the deterioration and improvement. It became therefore a clear need to create in Italy, as had long been Germany, Austria and France with their prestigious schools, a course of study in forestry can give life to our economy and technical characteristics of our territory.
