Geocache Description:

An interesting small boat harbour on Matakaea (Shag Point).

Yellow eyed penguins, New Zealand fur seals and spectacular views are not the only visitor attraction at Shag Point. Shag Point’s most recent history relates to coal mining. It is the first place in New Zealand where coal was used for commercial purposes. Mine shafts ran kilometres out under the seabed. Mining finally ceased after a 100 years of mining in 1974. A small boat harbour on the point has a small boat launching ramp named Nev's Ramp. This boat ramp was dedicated to a local stalwart who was the secretary of the Shag Point recreational fishing and diving club. The cache is a small pill container with log only, bring your own pen.
