THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!
The actual cache container is hidden within 1/2 mile of the posted coordinates.
Leonhard Euler (whose name rhymes with "boiler" not "ruler") was one of the greatest mathematicians the world has ever seen and one of my personal heroes. Quoting historian William Dunham...
"Euler was a mathematician of the very first rank, yet he is almost universally unknown among the general public, most of whom presumably cannot even pronounce his name. The same people who have never heard of Euler would have no trouble identifying Pierre-Auguste Renoir as an artist of Johannes Brahms as a musician or Sir Walter Scott as an author. Euler's contrasting anonymity is both an injustice and a shame.
But what makes it all the worse is that Euler's counterpart among painters is not Renoir but Rembrandt; his counterpart among musicians is not Brahms but Bach; and his counterpart among writers is certainly not Walter Scott but William Shakespeare. That a mathematician with such peers--the Shakespeare of mathematics--commands so little public recognition is a sad, sad commentary."
It is impossible to read about Euler's life and not be inspired. I know you are probably in a hurry to solve this puzzle, but when you get the chance, take some time to read a short biography of this remarkable man.
This puzzle cache is designed for you to become more familiar with "the Shakespeare of Mathematics." The correct coordinates of this cache can only be found by completing a short puzzle in which you will answer biographical and mathematical questions about the life and work of Euler. All of the answers are readily available online but may require a bit of creative searching.
Cache is a small tupperware container with room for small trade and trackable items. Bring your own pen and DO NOT search after dark.
Keeping with the mathematical theme there is a small Icosidodecahedron as the prize for First-To-Find!
This is my first attempt at a puzzle cache. I would appreciate your feedback. I am particularly interested to know if you are able to view/read the puzzle. Have fun!
The puzzle will load as a JPEG image below...
3/7/10 - Congratulation FTF ratjam!
4/10/12 - Updating with a fresher looking puzzle and a working coordinate checker. I also corrected an error in the posted digits of e and hopefully prevented any further misunderstanding as to the latitude of DOWNTOWN Saint Petersburg.
