There is parking available on roads around the industrial estate. This cache is just off a trans pennine trail path.
This cache is in tribute to the old tank that once stood close to here. It was placed at the side of the road to the entrance of the industrial estate just north of Chapeltown in Thorncliffe. The tank was a Churchill, and it was sited at the old Newton Chambers works where they were manufactured during World War 2.
The Thorncliffe works used to build army vehicles and became the largest manufacturer of Churchill tanks for the war effort. One of the tanks used to stand at the side of the road near the factory till recently removed. The Thornecliffe works manufactured a recorded total of 1160 Churchill’s of various marks.
The tank that stood here was used in the D day landings and Apparently Newton & Chambers drove it onto the concrete plinth as a monument and left it running while draining the oil to seize the engine so it would stay there.
The tank was removed in November 2007 and has been bought by a private individual and is now in the hands of respectable restorer.
