Neißeterrassen / Terraces of river Neiße EarthCache

Vor etwa 350.000 Jahren, während der Elstereiszeit, drang in einem Bereich von ca. 20 * 20km das Eis aus Norden schneller nach Süden vor als der Rest des Gletschers. In diesem Gebiet, das wir heute als Muskauer Faltenbogen bezeichnen, formte der sogenannte Muskauer Gletscher die Landschaft auf direktem und indirektem Wege und hinterließ hier eine Vielzahl geologisch interessanter Geländeformationen. Eine davon wollen wir Euch mit diesem Earthcache vorstellen.

Es gibt zwei Durchbrüche durch den Muskauer Faltenbogen. Einer davon ist ca. 2km breit,entstand während der Elstereiszeit und wurde durch abfließendes Schmelzwasser gebildet. Man nennt ihn ein Moränentor.

Der zweite Durchbruch hat eine andere Entstehungsgeschichte und unterscheidet sich sehr deutlich von ersterem. Dieser Durchbruch entstand erst während der jüngsten, der Weichseleiszeit, als sich die Neiße durch den Faltenbogen "hindurchgesägt" hat. Das Durchbruchstal ist nur ca. 200m breit, steilwandig und 20-30m tief.

Fließt nun ein Fluß - in diesem Fall die Lausitzer Neiße - für lange Zeit auf einem Höhenniveau, so bildet das Flußbett eine Terrasse. Verändert der Fluß nun durch äußere Umstände das Höhenniveau auf dem er fließt, so bleibt unter Umständen die ursprüngliche Terrasse erhalten und es bildet sich eine Neue.

Bei Pusack sind sechs solcher Terrassen bekannt und von den angegebenen Koordinaten aus sind vier davon gut sichtbar.

Um diesen Earthcache zu loggen, müsst Ihr folgende Aufgaben erledigen:

1. Besucht die Neißeterrassen an den angegebenen Koordinaten und beantwortet folgende Fragen.
2. Wie nennt man heute den ersten erwähnten Durchbruch durch den Muskauer Faltenbogen?
3. Beschreibt mit eigenen Worten zwei mögliche Ursachen für das Einschneiden der Neiße in den Faltenbogen.
4. Ermittelt mit Hilfe eures GPS-Gerätes den Höhenunterschied von den angegebenen Koordinaten bis zum Neißepegel.
5. Gebt eine Schätzung ab, wielange es dauerte, bis sich die Neiße auf das derzeitige Flußniveau durch den Faltenbogen "gegraben" hat.
6. Freiwillige Aufgabe: Wenn möglich, macht vor Ort ein spoilerfreies Foto von eurem Besuch. Qualitativ gute Fotos zu machen ist Bestandteil der Außentätigkeit von Geologen.
7. Mailt uns die Antworten und loggt den Cache (mit dem Foto). Wir melden uns, falls etwas nicht stimmt. Ihr braucht nicht auf eine Freigabe zu warten.

350.000 years ago, during the Elsterian glacial, in an area of 20 * 20km the glacial ice moved faster to the south than the rest of the glacier. Today this area is known as the Muskauer Faltenbogen. The so called Muskau glacier formed the landscape directly and indirectly. Here we have today a couple of interesting geological formations. One of them we would like to introduce you with this earthcache.

There are two breakthroughs in the Muskauer Faltenbogen. One of them is 2km in width and was originated during the Elsterian glacial. It was created during flowing off melting water. It is called a morainic outlet.

The second one has a totally different origin and differs a lot from the other one. This one was originated during the most recent, the weichselian glacial. The Neiße sawed through the Faltenbogen. The valley has a width of only 200m, has scarp flanks and is 20-30m in depth.

Is a river flowing - in this case the Lausitz' Neiße - for a long period of time on the same altitude level, a terrace is created by the river bed. If the river changes its altitude level, the original terrace is keeped and a new one is created. .

Near Pusack six of such terraces are know and from the mentioned coordinates there are four of them visible.

To log this earthcache you are required to fulfill the following tasks:

1. Visit the terraces of the river Neiße at the mentioned coordinates and answer the following questions.
2. How is the first mentioned break through to the Muskauer Faltenbogen called today?
3. Which two reasons can the carving of the river Neiße have?
4. Use your GPS device to determine the difference in altitude level between the mentioned coordinates and the level of the river Neiße.
5. Estimate the period of time that the river Neiße needed to carve down to the actual river level.
6. Optional Task: If you are able, post a picture free of spoilers of your visit at the site. Taking good quality photographs is part of the field work for geologists.
7. Send us the answers and log the cache (together with the picture). We'll contact you if something is wrong with your answers. You don't need to wait for log permission.
