Geocache Description:

From Guampedia (mostly):

The German SMS Cormoran pulled into Guam's neutral harbors in 1914 seeking fuel as well as safety from aggressive Japanese forces. The ship however, was denied the supplies and was ordered to stayput. After a change of Naval leadership on Guam, the Cormoran's crew was welcomed as friends to the island, celebrating among the locals and military personnel. But after 3 years, friends became enemies overnight when the U.S. declared war against Germany in 1917. U.S. forces were ordered to seize the Cormoran but its captain would not give her up. The Cormoran’s skipper, Captain Adalbert Zuckschwerdt, refused to surrender the ship, maintaining that he and his crew of more than 350, including several Chinese and Papua New Guineans, were willing to surrender, but not the ship. The navy took note of the German crew preparing to scuttle their ship and fired a warning shot over the bow of Cormoran, which is often cited as the first shot fired by the U.S. military in World War I. A total of seven crewmembers died during this event. Their bodies were later recovered and buried at the Agana naval cemetery in Old San Antonio (now East Hagåtña). The sunken ship now rests at the bottom of Apra Harbor, about half a mile out, SW from GZ.

THE CORMORAN

What's even more remarkable, is that another ship from WWII, the Tokai Maru, coincidentally sank and landed right on top of the Cormoran. That unique dive site could be the only place in the world where you can touch a WWI and WWII sunken relic at the same time.
