This Interurban was operated by St.Joseph Railway,Light,Heat & Power Co. between 1911 and 1939. A portion of the original rail bed is still used today as the southbound lanes of 71 hwy going to St.Joseph.
This interurban waiting room was part of the Dr. Nichols Sanitorium which was built in 1913.
Treating over 70,000 cancer patients between 1911 and 1956 , the Sanitorium became known around the world treating patients from the U.S,Canada,Australia and England.
In 1956 the Sisters of St.Francis purchased the property and dedicated it to the care or the aged. Today known as Laverna Heights, the Sisters still maintain the buildings while they are building a new facility just west of the current 5 story building.
