Geocache Description:

Happy Birthday
Geocaching !

It all started on May 1st, 2000 when President Clinton announced that the scrambling of the satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA), would be turned off. Everyone would now be able to enjoy greater accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) which would allow geocaching to become what it is today. The first stash was hidden by Dave Ulmer just outside of Portland, Oregon on May 3rd, 2000 and was found the next day. On May 30th, 2000 Matt Stum suggested the name geocaching which our great activity as been known by ever since. Now 10 years later, geocachers from around the world are getting together to celebrate 10 Years of Geocaching. There will be hundreds of events held around the world on May 1st/2nd 2010 to bring cachers together for this milestone in Geocaching.

Event details .... Even though there is a 10th anniversary celebration nearby on Saturday there is nothing to stop us celebrating again on Sunday. This event will be at the Rockcut pub in Rossland at 1:00pm and if 15 or more people commit to being there we can reserve the back room to make it extra special. Even if we can't get the back room it will still be a kid friendly event as kids are welcome on one side of the pub.The Rockcut is famous for their wings but if you would rather not buy lunch here that is o.k. too. Looking forward to meeting old and new friends and doing some geoyaking. Work is underway on a series of 10 new caches to be published in time for the event. This page will be updated as the event draws closer so stay tuned.
UPDATE ... March 28th
Well, it looks like we'll easily get 15 people at the event so I went ahead and booked the banquet room. No problem ... the "Cut" is pretty quiet at that time on a Sunday. Wireless internet is available on the large screen projector if we wish to discuss particular caches or the like. We have a few prizes on hand and there should be a little something for everyone. Warning ... there will be a multiple choice quiz. It is optional but those who try it get first dibs on prizes. Should also be new caches in the area to find before or after the event. Looking forward to seeing you all !
