Complete a multi-stage puzzle cache. Bring the kids. Be observant. Maybe they'll learn a little something new and run off some energy on the outdoor trail.

What is this piece of land hidden back on a dirt road in the woods? What is it's history? How do we remember it today?

Brunswick County is the home of one of the largest frontier forts ever built in Virginia, Fort Christanna (named for Christ and Queen Anne.)

Alexander Spotswood, Virginia's Royal Govenor from 1710-1722, built the pentagonal shaped fort in 1714. Each of the five sides was made of a palisade of split logs, 300 feet to a side. At each corner, small bastion houses held a 1400 pound cannon. The fort enclosed nearly 3.5 acres meant to be a center of trade and protection and to offer education to the resident native indians.

The Tributary Indians moved to Fort Christanna and banded under the name Tutelo/Saponie. They built a village, Junkatapurse, not far from the fort, where they learned to speak English, as well as teaching their language to the white inhabitants.

The Fort Christanna Historical Site was officially dedicated on April 25, 2009 with Governor Kaine issuing a proclamation declaring that day as Fort Christanna Day. Many items and illustrations from archaeological digs can be seen at the Brunswick County Museum located on Courthouse Square in Lawrenceville.

The fort site itself is listed on the Virginia Birds & Wildlife Trail and offers itself as a park that can be used and enjoyed by both county residents and tourists, by native Americans for special ceremonies, by school children and by those who enjoy the wildlife as much as the rich history. The site continues to be a work-in-progress as Brunswick County expands and develops both the historic/cultural and natural history aspects of this county treasure.
