Aaargh, Guillemot Cove! We first visited the old pirate hangout right before we discovered geocaching. We'd trekked the great trails and viewed the splendor of the beach and the Brothers across the Hood Canal and never realized that there were some great caches in this neck of the woods. So to honor our favorite local hike, and some of our first geocache finds, we decided our first geocache hide(s) should be right here. So ... go find it already. Congrats to Steve and Renee for the FTF!
No bushwhacking required ... just some searching after some hiking is all. The cache is less than three feet off the beaten path. Recommend boots or waterproof footwear if you go before the dry season ... whenever that is.
We do NOT recommend this one at night.
Cache was hidden during a time of year when foliage and overgrowth was minimal and played less havoc on the GPSr than might be the case for you when you visit.
We will warn you, from the parking area, the hike down to the beach is about a mile. There is a beautiful, lush trail with plenty of switchbacks that snakes down if you follow the trail to the right when it forks.
Then, there's the road, and that is the much easier way to the left. We recommend you take the trail if you're fit and trail-rated. If not, get your practice and exercise on the road. And remember, the road provides better exercise coming back up.
Shortly before the beach you'll see a trail to your left. You'll find this walk a bit more challenging if you chose the road coming down. But don't let us scare you or anything.
The cache is a small, cammo'ed, lock-and-lock container and it won't be sitting out in the open. MAKE SURE TO BRING YOUR OWN PEN OR PENCIL. Container will hold a few coins or travel bugs and only a few trade items.
