Geocache Description:

Maryland Geocaching Society
Cache Across Maryland 2010

This is one of ten caches placed for the 2010 Cache Across Maryland. Each location was picked specifically to give you a taste of the state and show you just a part of its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

This traditional CAM hide is located on the beautiful Maxwell Hall Park property. This facility has hundreds of acres with over 14 miles of well maintained hiking trails and plenty of wildlife. This cache requires about a 0.80 hike on a wide well maintained road/trail. Majority of the trail is flat and it does make for a pleasant hike. There is a picnic table near the cache so be sure to take a picnic lunch to enjoy along the waters edge. Dogs are permitted, but must be on a leash at all times. Bicycles and all forms of motorized vehicles (dirt bikes/ ATVs) are not allowed. A portable toilet is located in the main parking area. Hiker parking is available at the Equestrian area entrance at N 38 31.759 W 076 41.946. There are several other hides in the park for you to find along the way.

View

This property was once the farm of merchant and tobacco farmer George Maxwell. The orginal home, called Maxwell Hall, is located on the oposite side of the park was built in circa 1768. Maxwell Hall features massive twin chimneys and foundation stones of English chert. Local tradition holds that in the War of 1812, the British invasion forces took possession of Maxwell Hall during their march on Washington in August 1814.
