Geocache Description:

You are looking for a white Army Corps of Engineers water-tight container. It is small but not as small as a 35mm container. This cache only contains a log and a pencil.

The Newport observatory was established in 1966. The site, located in the Colville National Forest outside of Newport, supports several geophysical operations.

1. A seismometer for the USGS Advanced National Seismic System Program.

2. An infra sound facility, designated by the nuclear weapons Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and operated by contractors for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency of the Department of Defense under terms of a memorandum of agreement with the USGS.

3. Academic, governmental, and private scientists engaged in pure and applied work for The International Service of Geophysical Indices often visit this compound.

As you travers this section of the Geophysical Cross Country Ski Trails, you will observe various buildings that house the flux-gate magnetometer.
