This area is covered with numerous natural stone outcrops and boulders and lies near an old Indian trading path between the Waxhaws and what would become 'Charlottetown'. The nearby Providence Presbyterian Church (established 1767) is one of the original seven colonial Presbyterian churches in Mecklenburg. Also nearby, Providence Spring Elementary School is the namesake of a historic wet spring used by travelers along the trading path which is now known as Providence Road.
