In 2006 I took part in a voluntary project to survey the network of Ordnance Survey Triangulation Pillars and report on their condition. I covered the Trigs on the OS 1:50K map number 57 Stirling & the Trossachs and completed all but 3 of them in the time available but there were other surveyors and the project managed to cover over 90% of all UK Trigs. My highlight was visiting the Trig Point on St Kilda.
The project took me to places I had not thought of visiting - a bit like Geocaching - and I found a few gems. It has now struck me that the data I collected could be the basis of a good puzzle cache.
Now we all know that most (but not all) Trigs have a number plate with a number on them - usually S???? Because I kept my spreadsheet of these numbers I was able to create this little puzzle for you using those numbers. There may be other ways of solving this that don't require you to visit all the clue sites but many of them have Geocaches close by and are worth a visit anyway. You might like to take your time over them as a work in progress! I will recognise the FTF but look forward to receiving an FTV (First to provide proof of a visit to all the clue sites to cache owner - Mmmm - better start thinking of a reward!)
You need the Numbers from the following Trig Points. By the way because they were constructed for the OS I have used 6 figure Grid References to identify their location.
Dumyat NS 834 977
Lewis Hill NS 761 888
The Knock NS 781 982
Torwood NS 825 847
Sand Pit NS 484 879
The coordinates of the cache are found from:
N 56deg (Lewis Hill4)(Lewis Hill4).(Lewis Hill3)(Dumyat4)(Sand Pit2)min
W 004deg (The Knock4)(Dumyat4).(Torwood2)(The Knock4)(Dumyat3)min
The walk to the cache is on pathless terrain in places and requires some uphill work.
You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.
Scottiedogz are First to solve & First to Find but who will be First to Visit all the clue sites?
Well the answer is EAVESCLAN were the first to visit the component Trig Points then log the final location. Truly a great achievement. Well done.
