National Gold Medal Winner, Camp Helen is a property that was donated to the State of Florida.
Originally the 185 acres overlooking Phillips Inlet, was purchased by Robert and Margaret Hicks in the 1920's. They named their compound Loch Lomond.
The Lodge's quaint garden is usually missed by visitors. It has the original tiles and is in remarkable condition.
In the 1940's Avondale Textile Mills of Sylacauga, Alabama purchased the property and renamed it Camp Helen. The property was a resort for the company employees to use.
The property also has a water tower that was rebuilt except for two of the four corner posts and the cistern on top.
The property is surrounded by water on three sides and overlooks the largest coastal dune lake in Florida. This fresh water lake that is right next to the Gulf of Mexico where it can only be seen in this area. Only a few places in the world can lay claim to these natural wonders called Coastal Dune Lakes. New Zealand's Northland, Australia's Queensland, Madagascar, and Florida's Northwest Gulf Coast are home to these unusual lakes. This alone qualifies them as an incredibly rare phenomenon, worthy of discovery and exploration.
The Gulf CoastBeaches of Northwest Florida are the "world's most beautiful beaches". The lakes are fresh water bodies and the water levels change seasonally from rain and seapage through the surrounding coastal dunes from storms. The only thing seperating these frsh water lakes from the Gulf of Mexico are the dunes. Their height can be as high as 30 feet.
