This is the 6th in a series of caches set in the Deroche Lake
area. Gotta warn you again that they are definitely not for
everyone....especially this one!! See the D/T
rating!!
Park at N44 24.672 W077 14.743 at the end of Vanderwater
Road.
The 3500 acres of undeveloped conservation lands are known as
the "Cassidy Tract or " The Old Hungerford Tract," & shown on
Topo maps as MRCA lands. It is administered by the Quinte
Conservation Authority who sometimes leases 750 acre parcels to
hunters.
WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT VENTURE ONTO
THESE LANDS DURING THE HUNTING SEASON, USUALLY THE FIRST TWO WEEKS
OF NOVEMBER!!
Now the fun begins. There are two ways to get to this
cache...the hard way & the harder way!!
Once you arrive at the Beaver Dam...N44 24.764 W077 13.608
you have two choices...not pleasant ones but at least you get to
pick your "poison." You can get yourself one or two very stout
poles at least 6 feet in length...lots of them nearby, &
carefully walk 112 m across the beaver dam. This requires good
balance, a sure foot & very careful placement of poles...they
have a tendency to sink in the mud & pull you in with them. If
you fall...fall to the upstream side...water is shallow &
bottom is firm. Choice # 2 involves a 500 m bushwack to your right
to a creek crossing at N44 24.474 W077 13.553. Of course, that
means a 500 m bushwack back to the trail on the other side of the
beaver dam at N44 24.780 W077 13.524.
The Beaver Dam crossing is our preferred route & I've
done it safely many times.
We will then require you to walk another 200 odd meters where
you will find a well stocked ammo can, a FTF prize & our
heartiest congratulations for a job well done.
We will be awarding 2 FTFs for this one. One for the brave
cacher who dares the Beaver Dam crossing & one for the cacher
that has no sense of balance & chooses to bushwack a kilometer
around the end of the marsh & over the creek. Please indicate
in your log as to which route you choose.
Did we say wear rubber boots?
Good Luck!!!
