This is my new veteran's series.
These caches will be set to honor veterans who have served our country through out the years, and I will sometimes add a little tidbit of information, please read, and thank a veteran.
The 49-year-old general, who was from Rockwood, Tenn., held a bachelor's degree in industrial arts from Western Kentucky University and a master's degree in international relations from George Washington University.
General Wassom was trained as an artillery and missile officer and served in Vietnam. He rose through a variety of command positions with the 101st Airborne Division in the 1970's before becoming the head of the 528th Army Artillery Group in the United States Army Southern European Task Force in 1980.
In 1981, General Wassom became the deputy director of the staff for the Army Chief of Staff in Washington. In 1983 he became the chief of staff for the 101st at Fort Campbell, Ky. He later served as the assistant division commander for the 101st before assuming the post in Pakistan.
He was awarded his general's star in 1985.
General Wassom received decorations including the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
General Wassom died Aug. 18, 1988 in a plane crash thought to be sabotage.
