Geocache Description:

The Wood Cache. This is the second of four Bright Materials caches

This cache celebrates wood and all of the things made from it.

This cache is best approached starting where Gladstone Street and Homerule Street meet. There you will find a very impressive set of steps. The cache should be easy to find in late fall and very early spring when all of the vegetation is dead, but will likely be harder to find in the summer. The cache is an ammo box

You will find the cache in the midst of many trees and quite close to a vernal pond. Vernal ponds, also known as vernal pools or ephemeral pools, are temporary and form only in the spring from rain fall and snow melt. They then dry out in the summer. They are important because they are devoid of fish and are thus safe homes for baby amphibians.

I would ask that people make an effort to place items made of wood in this cache (geocoins are also always appreciated). While most paper comes from wood, the log book makes an effort to make that clearer.

* * *The Dream * * *
I dreamt again last night. This time I found myself among trees. Next to me stood a remarkable middle-age woman in a dress that might have been popular a century and a half ago. She stretched out her hand to me and beckoned me to look at what it held. On her open palm were polished pieces of dark and light wood. She began to name them:

“Black ebony, tiger ebony, robles, bayong, rosewood, redwood, iron wood” She dropped them into my hand and continued. “Eddie . . . Captain Schenley gave them to me shortly after we met. It was why I fell in love with him. People thought I was a stupid girl of fifteen and he a wicked man of forty-three. They thought that he was ruining me. But what they did not know was how beautiful I found his heart. Look at the gifts that he gave me! How could I not fall in love with him?! He was the kind of man who would think that chunks of polished wood are capable of wooing a girl. In the end everyone recognized, even the queen herself, that our love was worthy. We had many beautiful children and a full life. I wanted to share our happiness, so I gave the people of Pittsburgh the things that Eddie had given me: Trees, meadows, lawns, beauty.”

She gestured to the wood. “God has gifted to us a marvelous world. We serve ourselves and each other best by sharing it.”

The cache has been stocked with samples of Black ebony, tiger ebony, robles, bayong, rosewood, redwood, and iron wood. A rosewood pen has also been placed. A future visitor is encouraged to take it.

Entropy’s chaos eternally stands ready
To reduce creation to ruin.
But of stone and wood and crystal and iron and brass,
The Almighty Maker has ordained that Man
Take these bright materials to create more worlds.
