What A Corker! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

thebuttonmushroom: What with the fact that the ferry is no longer in action and I've sadly moved away from Swansea, there is little point keeping this one going. Thanks to all who found it, and I still have fond memories of Fraser-Cole biking down at high speed to get FTF within 24 hours of me thinking up the idea of the cache!! [:D] Hope the Irish ferry comes back one day...

Geocache Description:

This is a straight forward micro cache hidden near Swansea docks.

As I write this, the Swansea-Cork ferry is making the very final preparations before her maiden voyage to Ireland once again. Originally owned by Swansea Cork Ferries Ltd. the service operated from 1987 right up to 2006, enhancing the economies of both South West Wales and the Cork area of Ireland.

In 2006 their MV Superferry was scrapped and no replacement was provided so throughout 2007-9 no service ran at all. Now on the 10 March 2010, a new company has taken over, Fastnet Line Ltd. and has brought back the service with a new vessel named the Julia.

I have fond memories of when I was a child on holiday in Mumbles (I'm not from Swansea originally) and I'd see the ferry leaving Swansea Bay in the evenings as it made its lengthy journey across to the Republic of Ireland. It's my ambition to do this journey at some point now that the service is back (despite my history of seasickness!) and I look forward to hearing a few Irish accents around town!

I'm hoping that this cache, placed in honour of the new Swansea-Cork ferry service, will attract not only Welsh Geocachers, but also Irish ones who have used the service to come to Swansea. It's a relatively easy find, but had to be repositioned as sand kept burying it! It's an unusual micro - probably not one you've seen before, and doesn't have a pen or pencil so please bring your own. To protect it from the elements, I've left the cache in a small plastic bag. Hopefully it will be here for a long time to come!

NOTE: At present the Swansea-Cork Ferry is NOT running.

Happy hunting!
