The cache is in the vicinity of but not the grounds of the church and gardens.
Stealth will be required. The area is popular with Muggles visiting the Garden of Rest and dog-walkers and is busy all year round. We would recommend retreating with the cache to one of the several seats to complete the log.
The gardens are beautiful and well worth time taken to sit and reflect, or possibly to work out routes to the other caches on the hill.
St Bartholomew's Church
Sitting on the north east side of Chosen Hill, overlooking the Cotswold escarpment to the east stands the beautiful 12th century church of St Bartholomew's.
It was built on a mound which is said to be partially man-made and the site was believed to be a place of worship for hundreds of years prior to the construction of the church and was also an Iron-age fort.
Like many such buildings it has undergone various extensions and additions during its 900 year existence. In recent years St Bartholomew’s has undergone considerable restoration as it was in danger of falling down the hill.
Many of the large trees that surrounded the church have been felled and its foundations have been strengthened.
Chosen Hill is a mere 582 feet high and a beautiful place for walks and many pathways/tracks criss-cross the hill, but the main focus for many walkers/visitors is the ancient church. It has been suggested that the name “Chosen” comes from the fact that it was a chosen place because of its logistical location; an ideal spot to keep an eye on the surrounding area for miles and miles.
There is also a story about the devil ‘choosing’ the site of the church, insisting it should be there.
