Geocache Description:

In the middle of a very populated cemetery, why is there a large empty field? On May 24, 1870 this field was set aside as a Potters Field. A Potters Field was an area set aside in a cemetery for those that could not afford a proper burrial. Burials took place until 1928 and were marked with a wooden stake bearing a number. Sometime in the 1930's a prairie fire swept through burning all of the stakes. There are an estimated 705 people buried in this area with only a few having a marker to show their resting place.

Some people of note in the cemetery are:

"Sotireos P. "Sam" Persaris - Sam was a cabin boy aboard the British ship Carpathia in 1912 when it was the first ship to answer the distress call of the Titanic.

Sylvester H. Brown - Mr. Brown was a Civil War veteran who saw Abraham Lincoln assassinated. He was a body guard to President Lincoln and was givien the night off. Mr. Brown attended the Theatre and witnessed the fatal shot and was involved in the chase that followed.

Cache placed with knowledge of property manager. Cache is an ammo can.
