You're batting against a pitcher with a mean fastball. You're
behind in the count 0-2. You took the first one looking. You were
way behind the second pitch. The pitcher thinks he's got you. Will
he shame you with a third fastball? Does he think you'll swing
early this time and embarass you with a change-up? Will he just
throw you junk, since he's ahead? You know (by Newton's third law,
of course), that the harder he throws the ball, the farther it will
go if you make solid contact with it. The coach knows you want to
swing. He's seen you hit that ball in practice. He knows you're not
gonna get a walk out of this one. He gives you the signal to swing.
You decide that at least you're not going to go down looking. And
here's the pitch! In just milliseconds, you decide that it's the
real thing, a fastball, down the pipe. You swing. You put your full
body into it. Ping!!! Solid contact! That ball is up, up, up,
and it is SO FAR OUTTA HERE! HOME RUN!
The ball hits over the scoreboard, almost 250 feet from home
plate over the left field fence!
Look up from where the ball landed, and there the cache will
be!
