To get to the cache location:
Turn onto Boomer-Ferguson School Road and make a left just
before the school onto Campground Road and then a quick left
through the gate to an observation area. DO NOT
try and access this cache from the road before the one specified
above, it is a private driveway.
From the overlook you'll be able to see the W. Kerr Scott
Reservoir in the distance to the east. Named for William Kerr
Scott, Governor of North Carolina from 1949 to 1953 and a US
Senator from 1953 to 1958, who played a great role in the approval
of the dam and the reservoir that was built by the US Army Corps of
Engineers between 1960 and 1962.
Built to help control and contain the floods of the Yadkin-Pee
Dee River. The project also helped secure and maintain a source of
water for the surrounding area and offered recreational benefits as
well. Several wildlife refuges and camping locations are found
along both sides of the reservoir.
Depending on the weather, if you stand near the end of the
parking area closest to the cache location and look towards the
west on the horizon, you can make out Grandfather Mountain.
