Rye was well known for shipbuilding, fishing & trading as far back as the 13th century, but even then the Sussex coastline was being continuously eroded, and the shingle was pushed ever eastwards. By the middle of the 15th century the sea was receding rapidly. Much of the surrounding countryside, although marshy, was reclaimed and enclosed. Sheep grazed on the marshes and the wool trade grew. The river Rother had become a narrow channel only 16 feet wide in some places, and the state of many ports in the area caused a great deal of anxiety. In 1488 King Henry VII visited Rye briefly, and the next year a ship was made for him in Rye's boatyards, many of which were situated in Rock Channel and the Strand. In 1539 his son, king Henry VIII asked Rye, as a major supplier of fish to the London Markets, to send fish to Dover for the arrival of Anne of Cleves, his bride to be. Something went sadly awry for when the fish were delivered they were refused by the king's men. Following a decline in the 17th centuries, Rye rallied and shipbuilding reached a new peak in the 19th century. The economic slump in the 1920's and 30's hit the fishing industry hard, but it survived, and today a small fishing fleet still sails out to the channel and a few boat building yards remain, with pleasure craft moorings in the town itself at Strand Quay.
