Bridges are common hiding places for geocaches*. Altoid tins
with magnets or the ever-popular hide-a-key are often the
hider’s weapons of choice. But this is no micro, and a wooden
bridge presents an interesting twist. How wet are you going to have
to get for this one?
Lesson #2 of the Geo Skills Trail: What doesn't belong
here? Does anything seem out of place? Make careful observations,
without being destructive.
Wearing gloves while searching is always a good idea. You can avoid
a lot of hazards like splinters, glass cuts, bamboo shoots up the
fingernails, stings and bites.
Yes, this area is flood prone. So having a properly sealed
container is a must. It is always a good idea to use extra zip loc
bags for all items inside the cache. Please be sure to replace the
cache exactly as you found it and double check the seal. And if you
find the cache in disrepair or a wet log, be sure to note that
online in your log, post a “Needs Maintenance” note or
contact the cache owner.
Another important point: There is no shame in posting a DNF
log! DNF logs are a flag to let the owner know how the cache is
doing. Is the difficulty rating accurate? Are hints needed? Too
many DNFs in a row and the owner knows to go check on it. And an
owner is much more likely to offer help and hints to a cacher who
has already searched and come up short than one who will not admit
they have even tried to find the cache on their own!
*Please remember highway bridges are designated a
potential terrorist target by the Geocaching
guidelines and therefore are off limits. Always use common
sense when choosing a location and cache type. High traffic areas
are not the best locations for ammo boxes. Transparent plastic
containers clearly marked as geocaches are best to avoid
unnecessary alarm.
About the Geo Skills
Trail:
This trail is a joint effort between the Oxley Nature Center and
Tulsa Area Geocachers. The
caches along the trail provide a variety of cache types, sizes and
styles to help educate and introduce the hobby of Geocaching to new
cachers. And of course, these caches will be fun for veteran
cachers as well. And who doesn't enjoy a nice walk in the woods?
While hiking the trail please be sure to practice CITO (Cache in,
Trash out). TAG has adopted the North
Woods Loop trail as a service project to thank Oxley Nature
Center and Tulsa Parks for allowing and encouraging Geocaching in
the parks system. As your personal CITO of the trail is part of
this service, please be sure to post your experiences along the
trail in one of your logs.
Besides the 8 designated Geo Skills Trail caches, there are also
several other caches in the trail system, including an Earthcache,
Puzzle Cache and several traditional caches, and many more
throughout Mohawk Park. Enjoy your walk and be sure to take time to
observe the nature all about you.
Remember, Mohawk Park's
gates open at 7 am and close at 9 pm! On weekends, April 1 -October
31, you'll need to bring $2/vehicle to enter Mohawk Park, unless you
are a member of Friends of Oxley Nature Center or Zoo Friends. Pets
are not allowed on the Nature Center trails, but leashed ones can
enjoy other parts of Mohawk Park
