It’s hard to believe with the cars rushing past on the nearby bypass but, if you had visited this location one hundred years ago, you would have found yourself amongst peaceful dairy herds owned by the tenants of Old Ford Farm on the banks of the River Ash. The farm buildings, dating back to the 17th century, survived until after the second World War, when they were turned into a builder's yard. The farm was finally demolished in the 1950s and replaced with the present block of flats, Fordbridge Court, located on the opposite side of the A308 bypass next to the roundabout. The River Ash still runs through the roundabout and past the flats.
Originally, a track ran nearby and crossed the river Ash via a gravelly ford near the farm. The main road to Staines (now Kingston Road) crossed the river over Ford Bridge (the bridge's 1920s replacement still exists underneath the southern side of the roundabout). Travellers coming over the bridge from Staines had a choice of turning left to cross a water meadow towards the farm, then joining the track to head into Ashford, or they could turn right towards Sunbury.
Fordbridge Park was split into two parts when the A308 bypass was constructed. You can walk along Woodthorpe Road to visit the other smaller part where you will find GC1HP88 "Swim, not any more in this location" and a walkway along the River Ash (may be muddy, open water so hang on to children).
This cache is located in Fordbridge Park. There is parking available in the park (poorly marked entrance from Kingston Road). The terrain is flat and level, and suitable for pushchairs. There are paved paths near to the location of the cache.
