How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Cache is NOT at the posted coordinates - but it's less than two miles away.

Historical Note: . After discovering the useful Certitude coordinate checker on a trip to CA in 2008, I wanted to combine it other checkers, namely GeoChecker and Evince. This cache is the result. Unfortunately Evince went out of business in 2017, rendering this cache somewhat harder. Geocaching.com's checker wasn't implemented until about ten years later.

There are three distance restrictions regarding the placement of new caches: (See the guidelines.)
  • Saturation restriction: a new physical cache has to be at least 528 feet from the nearest physical cache.
  • Railroad restriction: a cache has to be at least 150 feet from the nearest railroad track.
  • Puzzle restriction: The actual location of the cache should be within two miles of the posted location.

This cache is barely legal. In particular:

  • The closest cache when this was placed is a traditional cache which is just over 528 feet away.
  • (However, another more recent cache was placed only 450 feet away.)
  • The nearest point on the nearest railroad track is 170 feet away.
  • The distance from the posted coordinates to the solution is 10557 feet.

Coordinate checkers

  • - within 650 feet: GeoCheck
  • - (within 150 feet: Evince Unfortunately, Evince went out of business in 2017. Thank you Evince for all all the help for several years.)
  • - within 25 feet:

  • You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
  • The geocaching.com checker below is accurate with the last digits of the latitude and longitude both equal to 1.
