This is one of a series of caches created for the purpose of introducing geocachers to the rich history, the extensive path network and the general scenic beauty of the Irvine Valley.
The walk to this cache will take you close to Cessnock Castle which dates from around the 15th Century. The castle was restored to its present state around 1900 by the Duke of Portland and it is now a private house. After her defeat at the Battle of Langside, Mary, Queen of Scots, is reputed to have taken refuge here. Other visitors of note include the reformist preacher John Knox and the poet Robert Burns.
Park in Galston on the B7037 Sorn road and follow the Burnhouse Brae and Cessnock Woods trail that starts at
N55 35.686 W004 22.293
The trail runs through pleasant deciduous woodland and parallel to the Burn Anne. After one mile, it links with the Burn Anne Walk and the Threepwood Historical Trail that lead uphill over open countryside to a superb viewpoint at Target Wood. Along this two mile walk there are another three caches............
