Geocache Description:

Park & grab. Tape covered pill bottle.

Holyoke canal system was conceived and built to utilize the water power that could be generated by the Connecticut River. A dam was built where the origional falls were located. The canals were dug to make use of the natural topography of the area. They consisted of the first, second and third level canals. Water was let in to the water wheels on the third level canal and exited into the second level canal. The water from the second level canal was directed into the first level canal. Water from the first level canal entered flumes that exited to the Connecticut River. As a result of the canal system Holyoke became the first planed industrial city in the United States and was know as "The Paper City" of the world.
