The 322 megawatt (MW) Whitelee Wind Farm was completed ahead of schedule in May 2009. It is Europe's largest onshore wind farm, built by Scottish Power, which is part of the Spanish renewable energies company Iberdrola Renovables. The wind farm uses 140 Siemens wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 2.3 MW.
Positioned 370 metres (1200 feet) above sea level, 15 kilometres (9 miles) outside Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, the wind farm has over half a million people living within a 30 km radius. It is one of the first large-scale wind farms to be constructed close to a large population centre.
The first phase of the wind farm started feeding power into the electricity grid in January 2008.
The wind farm has authorisation for a further 36 turbines,[2] which would increase capacity to 452 MW. Capacity could later be extended to almost 600 MW.
The Scottish government has a target of generating 31% of Scotland's electricity from renewable energy by 2011 and 50% by 2020. The majority of this is likely to come from wind power.
I beleive the site is the remains of an old croft or perhaps some sort of animal shelter,nonetheless,in its day it offers a fantastic view right over to Glasgow and Paisley.
Please heed the warnings regarding safety during Lightning or icy conditions on the wind farm.I suggest starting at the Whitelee visitor centre which re opens on March 22nd,2010 where you can park for free and enter the visitor centre.Alternatively,there are a couple of lay bys on the moor road where you can park.
