Geocache Description:

In the Savage River State Forest at 1793 feet. Cache near the Govenor Thomas Overlook.

This cache is located in the Savage River State Forest at the Govenor Thomas Overlook. It offers a view of the Savage River dam. A tower built in 1980 offered a great view but has been closed by the State. Perhaps some phone calls to the Savage River Forest headquarters with the offer of some volunteer time would convince them to repair the tower. Visitors can park at the base of the overlook along the Savage River road in a parking area. A short uphill walk followed by some limited briar busting should put you at the cache.

Note: You may notice some wire cages attached to locust trees. These were to capture emerging locust borers in the Spring as p/o a study by the Univ. of Md. in the early 1980's.

The cache is a PVC pipe with a TIGHT lid. Initially it contained:

  • camera- take pictures but please leave the camera
  • log book, pencils, sharpener(please leave it)
  • train keychain
  • handwarmers
  • Canadian Rockies pin
  • band-aides
  • safety pins
  • string
  • Mammals of Western Md. booklet
  • plastic worm
Driving Directions:
Rt 495 to Melinger Rd; Melinger rd. to Spring Lick rd; Spring lick rd to Savage River rd; left on Savage River rd to the Overlook parking lot

Rt 495 to Dry Run rd; Dry Run rd to Savage River rd; right on Savage River rd to the Overlook parking lot.

The objective is to get on the Savage River rd and proceed to the Govenor Thomas Overlook parking area, NW of the Savage River dam.
